The Tech Hiring Grid analysed 10,000+ jobs posted from January and May 2025, using a combination of algorithms and survey responses across the Western European country universe, with a focus on identifying top trends in technology jobs, skills, locations and the extent of diversity and inclusive hiring in these roles.
What This Study Covers and What It Doesn’t.
We looked at jobs published in English primarily across Western and Northern Europe, where English is a dominant language in cross-border recruitment. As a result, regions like the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany show higher representation. Countries such as Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Poland, where local-language postings are more extensive, do not fully reflect in our study. We hope to cover them in future editions.
Let’s dive deep into what we found in our study
When we analysed 10,000+ tech jobs across Western Europe between January and May 2025, we identified the top 10 job titles by hiring volume.
Top 10 Roles by Number of Job Openings (Jan-May ’25):
Take a quick look at these Job Titles featuring in the top 10, and you understand that these roles are being hired for building something new. For instance, Project Managers and Business Analysts play a “Building something” role.
Meanwhile, the inclusion of Data Engineers, Data Architects, and Data Analysts points to another continuing trend: Companies are strengthening their data pipelines, the lifeblood of automation and AI. You can’t scale intelligent systems without reliable, structured data.
This hiring trend tells a clear story: businesses aren’t just filling seats, they’re building the foundations of long-term, tech-led growth.

Next, we analysed the top 10 most frequently required skills and observed a clear inclination toward modularity, cloud nativity, and data integrity, skills that help organisations navigate complexity and deliver predictability.
Top 10 Skills by Frequency of Occurrence across all the Jobs:
Java, Python, and SQL continue their presence in the top 10 skills needed. The presence of Azure and AWS highlights the ongoing shift of workloads to the cloud and the demand for scalable, hybrid infrastructures.
A notable inclusion is SAP (with all modules consolidated), highlighting the continued relevance of legacy ERP ecosystems across sectors such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and BFSI. Rather than being phased out, these systems are undergoing modernisation. Given SAP’s European roots, its prominent presence in the European hiring landscape is expected
A Quick geo-focused analysis shows us the top 10 cities in western and northern Europe.
Top 10 Job Locations
London continues to be the primary hub for tech and transformation hiring. However, the emergence of smaller towns such as Knutsford, Northampton, and Warwick is noteworthy. These cost-effective, digitally enabled locations are becoming strategic choices for companies looking to expand with precision
Diversity and inclusivity have become key focus areas for businesses in shaping their talent strategies. Over the past few years, many organisations have placed a strong emphasis on ensuring that a certain portion of their workforce is hired through diversity and inclusivity initiatives. In this study, we also examined the progress that diversity and inclusive hiring have made over time.
However, how do we measure that shift?
We created the Diversity Progression Index to establish a signal-based benchmark that quantifies the share of job listings actively prioritising diverse hiring based on the language they use, the structures they propose, and the intent they reflect.
To achieve this, we built our algorithm and analysed all the job listings included in this study through the lens of the Diversity Index.
Mathematically, the Diversity Progression Index is defined as:
(Jobs that reflect Diversity Values from within the Total Jobs ) *100 / (Total Number of Jobs in our study)
Our Algorithm determined that between Jan-May 2025
This means that a quarter of all analysed Tech job postings were diversity-friendly or actively seeking diversity candidates.
The important thing is that it means diversity isn’t being treated as a separate HR initiative anymore. It’s being built directly into the roles, the skills, the functions, and the cities where the future of tech is taking shape.
Now, let’s go deeper and cover a few dimensions around the details of Diversity hiring.
Top 5 roles that demonstrated greater diversity representation, each exceeding the aggregate Diversity Index benchmark of 25%
Roles in Engineering leadership and design-facing functions, such as Engineering Manager, Automation Tester, and UX/UI Designer, show higher than average Diversity index scores than the aggregate. This suggests a growing emphasis on representation within product, accessibility, and system design teams.
The greatest variation in Diversity Index Scores emerges when examining hiring locations.
While London, Stockholm, and Malmö remain key hubs across both sets, several smaller or less represented cities appear more frequently in the diversity dataset, as represented below:
The data from our study indicates that diversity-friendly hiring is a non-trivial part of the Open Job roles.
There’s no one-size-fits-all conclusion here, but the signals suggest that businesses are broadening their approach to workforce representation, not only at the leadership or policy level, but in how teams are being built from the ground up.
